Today we boarded yet another tender
and another bus!
Today's shore excursion was to the Black House Museum
and the Calanais Standing Stones. Black Houses were once the
only houses on the Isle of Lewis. They have no windows or chimneys
and are made with thatched roofs. Smoke from an open peat fire
inside escaped
through the roof instead of a chimney. A full year's supply
of peat, which is abundant in the soggy valleys, can
be cut in one
day by just three people. The cattle byre was attached to the
house and the family lived inside with the animals. Robert and
I found these houses fascinating
