however could not imagine anyone ever living in them. They were built with low ceilings and doorways and were thick with the stench of smoke.

The Calanais Standing Stones are truly amazing! The stones, older than the famous Stonehenge circle, are well recognized Lewis icons. There are 50 massive stones set up along the shore of Loch Roag which have been standing for more than 4,000 years. Many of the stones are in line with the paths of stars or planets (which correlate to seasons), so scientists assume they may have had something to do with predicting planting cycles.

Dorothy and Jean chose to spend their shore time checking out Stornoway itself and going shopping. After our bus tour we elected to be dropped off in Stornoway as well. We wandered around to check out the ambience and to take pictures. We got a nice picture of Lews Castle which is opposite the town and harbor on a hilltop. The castle, now a small college, is surrounded by wooded grounds—the only place on the island where there are trees! When Sir James Matheson built the castle there was not enough soil for his dream house so he imported boatloads from Scotland!

I skipped trivia and Bingo today. Robert returned from trivia with a Dam umbrella for a prize. He told me it took four tie breaker questions for their team of him, Dorothy, Jean and three others to win.

During dinner tonight we all kept wondering why the ship appeared to be spinning in one place past the time it was scheduled to leave. Finally the captain came on to say when the anchor up there were wires all twisted around it. A tender had to be lowered so someone could go out to cut the wires. We were 45 minutes late getting underway.

Tonight's entertainment after dinner and before tonight's showtime was a game called "Nowhere Near a Millionaire." Contestants were selected by correctly answering a quiz. Not a single person of the 25 or so who took the quiz got it right. The cruise director, Peter, was forced to just randomly drew a name. The name that came up was Dorothy Lewis! She had to go up onstage, be in the spotlight, and answer 12 questions. For each question she answered correctly, she won a special Dam prize then moved on to the next question. If she didn't know the answer, Peter would just give her hints, sometimes quite blatant, until she got it. Apparently this is normally how this game is played on a cruise. Whoever gets selected as a contestant always wins. So of course Dorothy won! She ended up with twelve different prizes all stuffed into a Dam canvas bag. She got a pen, a postcard, hat, key chain, picture frame, mag light, luggage tag, disposable camera, umbrella, mug, calculator/travel clock and a chart map of Stornoway which the captain is going to autograph for her (appropriate considering Stornoway is on the Isle of Lewis)! Between this and all the trivia prizes she is collecting quite a haul! Between all the game playing, last night and tonight Dorothy is becoming quite the celebrity.

Tonight is the Dessert Extravaganza! Tomorrow our port of call is Kirkwall, Orkney Islands.
