We took the 11:00 ferry over to the island and were happy the fog that was hanging all about was relatively light on the island itself when we arrived. Sierra totally enjoyed the ride over: Watching the ferry turn about, the birds in the air, the splashing water, the different boats and the swarm of school kids who were on board for a special group outing.
Once we disembarked, Sierra was quite happy to climb into the stroller to head up the hill on a 1.6 mile hike to find a good spot to enjoy the picnic lunch we packed (yes it included those cookies she helped Grandpa make). We found a table in the sun, which we all enjoyed since, overall, it wasn't all that warm on the island. Our table was located very near to an old grain mill. After eating, Grandpa and Sierra enjoyed checking out the mill. We then headed back down the hill knowing Sierra would soon be telling us she needed to use the bathroom.
On the way up, we spotted a very unique caterpillar. Sierra was very intrigued. On our way back down, when we reached the same spot on the road where we originally saw the caterpillar, she asked us, "Where did the caterpillar go?" We told her we didn't know. She told us, "Maybe he went back home to his mommy."
Most of the time, Sierra liked riding in the stroller. From time to time though she would tell us she wanted out so she could walk for a while. On one of her walk outs, she spotted a doe and told us, "I see a reindeer." Remembering this is what Aubrey calls deer I looked around and sure enough, there the baby was, standing perfectly still near old army buildings as it watched a very close tram go by. Sierra then said she saw two reindeer and sure enough again, looking closer, we saw the mother deer too. Thank you Sierra for showing us what we otherwise would have missed!
And this was a surprise, Not only did we share the road with hikers, bikers, and trams, we also shared it with—can you believe it—Segways!
Once we hiked back down from our picnic spot, we still had an hour and a half before the 3:30 return ferry . We hung out in the grassy area for a while, picked a few daisies, watched the seagulls dare to come right up to us, and counted sailboats on the water before deciding ice cream, hot chocolate, and coffee at the island cafe would be a nice treat while finishing out our wait for the ferry.
Once back in Tiburon, in our car and on the freeway, Sierra was asleep within five minutes!
Sierra was absolutely stellar today, her attitude, her fascination with everything and the way she was so grown up acting! She had so much self confidence and marched right on out wherever we went. And, she was totally on the team all day long. She was such a trooper. We are so enjoying this little two-year-old person! |
